Lets Talk Photography - The "Sitting Fee" and some more about our free consultations

From time to time I'm asked about a "sitting fee".  Actually, my "sitting fee" is probably better described as a "Creation Fee" since there is much, much more involved than sitting someone before my camera.

Before we begin your photo session... The Cardinal Rule: I need to discover what about this portrait is most important to you.

One of the unique factors to my studio is the time we take in preparation to ensure your finished portrait is beautiful and is exactly what you dreamed of.  I believe in this process so much that I guarantee your complete satisfaction or you don’t pay anything! 100% of your money will be refunded if your portrait is not wonderfully stunning and the best portrait you’ve ever taken.  My desire is to help you and your family look your very best in this photograph and create a portrait that “speaks” to you – that every time you look at it, it says, “we love and care about each other.” After all, your portrait is more than just a photograph – it’s a priceless emotional statement of your love and relationship!

The pre-session consultation at a time convenient to you is a valuable part of the process. Some of the can be easily handled over the phone by calling 615-773-1702.  Answers to the following questions are helpful to me in creating sensitive, truly meaningful family portraits:

  • Will this be for a special occasion?
  • Is this going to be a surprise for anyone?
  • Do you see these photographs as being dressy or more casual?
  • Do you see these photographs as being sharp and precise or soft and stylized?
  • Are you considering black and white or color?
  • How long has it been since you had nice portraits created and were you pleased with them?
  • What didn’t you like about your last portrait?
  • How long do you feel it will be before you have another fine portrait created?

Another unique factor to my studio is that I can actually come to you for the consultation.  Since my specialty is fine family wall portraiture, I find it extremely helpful to see where and how you plan to present it.  How your portrait will complement your present interior design and taste is helpful in deciding what to wear, the background, the lighting and even the type of frame you will require.  I offer many different sizes for my portraiture, even custom sizes and custom framing.  Having this knowledge before hand will enable me to shoot with a particular crop in mind and ensure that nothing important to the image will be left out in post-production.

The actual creation fee is used for my time preparing the mechanics of the shoot including equipment, setting lights, set design, shooting the session, editing and enhancing the images for presentation as well as the actual presentation. For example, the creation for a studio session that will last an hour and a half is $39.95. A location portrait session in this area is $75.00 and a senior session with wardrobe changes in studio and on location is also $75.00.

Why don’t we get together and chat about your session   Call 615-773-1702 to schedule a consultation. You will be amazed at what you will learn. As always, there is absolutely no obligation or any charge for a consultation. Mention this article and you will also receive a free Tanning Bed session from my pals Julie and Rich at TanSations just for dropping by for a chat.

I have to tell you, my wife Kim says I’m way to “windy” when answering these questions.  As usual, she’s probably right, but this is my passion. I love to create art that has meaning. Most photographers don’t like doing family portraits because they are difficult to do really well. But I love the challenge in creating them!
