Many thanks to Greg Stangl, PPA Master Photographer in Aurora, IL for the inspiration.

Summer 2005 Vol I Number 14A

You made it.  You're  your last year of High School and what a great year you're going to have. Everyone knows the Class of 2007 Rocks!

You will be faced with a lot of important decision this school year and one is coming up quick.  You need to decide that your Senior Picture won't look like your Freshman picture.

You need to look your very best for such an important photo shoot which is why I threw together a few must knows,  no matter who you choose for your photographer.

Plus an added bonus! What to do if you must go to a contracted school photographer for your annual picture???

Must Knows:

  1. Glasses - For the most part glasses look great and are certainly a part of your look, (if you wear them) so bring them along, they are a part of who you are. However, they can be tricky for some photographers.  Do not accept glare on your originals.   Over the years I have developed techniques that virtually eliminate problems occurring from eye glasses. Bring the shades too, they are cool for some "sly" shots or to just wear on top of your head.

  2. Beards or Facial Hair - is great, hey,  you are who you are. You probably should check with your school and make sure they will allow facial hair in the yearbook. Check it out dude some people are just funny like that.

  3. Ladies Here it Is - You've got to be at your best with your makeup on the day of your session. That doesn't mean go overboard to look like someone you're not.  All I mean is take the time to get it right. Apply a little color to your cheeks that complements your well defined eyes.  I want to offer you some stunning tight shots and a well lit close-up is beautiful when everything comes together. Don't worry if on the day of the shoot you have a small blemish or two.  First use a little base for cover and I'll handle the rest in post production. You wont even see them when your portraits are returned. It's also a good idea to bring some extra makeup along for touchups and a little powder to cut down shine.

  1. Hair, Very Important - Forget the new "do" before a session. A new "do" aint you until you're comfortable. Don't risk it because it could trash the shoot. Same goes for you guys.  You don't want to look like you just got a haircut for "Picture Day", that's Freshman stuff. Schedule your session a week or so after the haircut. The key thing here... Ric Farrah Photographs wants to photograph you...the real you, because, even if its hard to believe now, your Senior Portraits   will be handed down to your children and beyond.  And another thing, everyone, lay-off the hair color before the shoot, especially the drug store stuff.  The camera may render the color different than we see it and you will be disappointed.  If you must color your hair spend the bucks and get it done by a professional and even then wait a week or so to let everything calm down a bit.

  2. What On Earth To Wear - We need to capture a moment in time that is the true you. Bring to the shoot what best speaks to you. If you are into sports bring your uniform or jersey and other items that represent you and your sport.  If you own a "bad ride", drive it over and dress for that style of shot.  Also, its important to ask Mom and Dad for their choice of an outfit or two.  Posing in formal outfits can be very cool particularly outside or in black and white. Prom dresses are great to capture that formal look.  I'll match your outfits to the appropriate background.  I have several different looks in my studio and we are within walking distance to neatly manicured beautiful park-like grounds complete with seasonal blooming flowers, walking bridges, a pond and large fountain.  In general solid colors clothing work better than an aggressive print because the wild look in your clothes distracts from the splendor in you! Just like solid colors, long sleeves work very well.  Finally, bring all the accessories that express your personality.

  3. Bottom Line - This is your photo shoot and time and careful detail to your needs will be the priority.  You are not just another senior needing their Senior Picture. You are a valued client who will not be treated like a number.  You can get more info to make your shoot a success by checking out the other topics in this newsletter or even better, give Ric Farrah Photographs a call at 615.773.1702. My consultations either by phone or in the studio are always free and there is absolutely no obligation!
